Silly conversation that I want to remember
July 31, 2011 at 8:38 pm (C'est La Vie)
H: I heard u saw more than me than my two and a half years here
M: hmmm… So u know? Alamak! Thought is a special show u arranged for me…
H: not me…. ( a smile on his usually stern face) Philippe maybe. Is he French? Italian?
M: dunno. Don’t suppose I have time to ask him
Two weeks later
H sitting alone at a corner
M: hi. How are u? Back for meeting?
H: yes. How r u? Anyone running after u?
M: u are terrible
H: well it’s good to have people run after u, just a matter of whether they are wearing clothes (smiles)

It is simply too hard to try to hide the disappointment but I am 90% sure tt I have been by passed for promotion again.
If slogging the last yr doesn’t count, I am not sure what does.

Slow down
February 20, 2011 at 9:38 pm (C'est La Vie)
Read this off a friend’s facebook post, thought i want to keep it somewhere which i can refer to one day, when life gets crazy.
============================
It’s been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish company. Working for them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any project here takes 2 years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple and brilliant. It’s a rule.
Globalized processes have caused in us (all over the world) a general sense of searching for immediate results.. Therefore, we have come to possess a need to see immediate results. This contrasts greatly with the slow movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand, debate, debate, debate, hold x quantity of meetings and work with a slowdown scheme. At the end, this always yields better results.
1. Sweden has 2 million inhabitants. .
2. Stockholm has 500,000 people.
3. Volvo, Escania, Ericsson, Electrolux, are some of its renowned companies. Volvo even supplies NASA.
The first time I was in Sweden , one of my colleagues picked me up at the hotel every morning. It was September, bit cold and snowy. We would arrive early at the company and he would park far away from the entrance (2000 employees drive their car to work).
The first day, I didn’t say anything, neither the second or third days. One morning I asked him, “Do you have a fixed parking space?
I’ve noticed we park far from the entrance even when there are no other cars in the lot.”
To which he replied, “Since we’re here early we’ll have time to walk, don’t you think that whoever gets in late will need a place closer to the door?” Imagine my face.
Nowadays, there’s a movement in Europe named Slow Food. This movement establishes that people should eat and drink slowly, with enough time to taste their food, spend time with the family, friends, without rushing. Slow Food is against its counterpart, Fast Food and what it stands for as a lifestyle. Slow Food is the basis for a bigger movement called Slow Europe, as mentioned by Business Week.
Basically, the movement questions the sense of “hurry” and “craziness” generated by globalization, fuelled by the desire of “having in quantity” (life status) versus “having with quality”, “life quality” or the “quality of being”.
French people, even though they work 35 hours per week, are more productive than Americans or British. Germans have established 28.8 hour workweeks and have seen their productivity driven up by 20%..
This slow attitude has come to the notice of USA , the pupils of the fast and “do it now” brigade.
This no-rush attitude doesn’t represent doing less or having a lower productivity. It means working and doing things with greater quality, productivity, perfection, with attention to detail and less stress.
It means re-establishing family values, friends, free and leisure time.. Taking the “now”, present and concrete, versus the “global”, undefined and anonymous.
It means taking humans’ essential values, the simplicity of living.
It stands for a less coercive work environment, more happy, lighter and more productive work place where humans enjoy doing what they know best how to do.
It’s time to stop and think on how companies need to develop serious quality with no-rush that will increase productivity and the quality of products and services, without losing the essence.
In the movie, ‘Scent of a Woman’, there’s a scene where Al Pacino asks a girl to dance and she replies, “I can’t, my boyfriend will be here any minute now”. To which Al Pacino responds, “A life is lived in an instant”. Then they dance the tango!
Many of us live our lives running behind time, but we only reach it when we die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing to be on time. Others are so anxious to live for the future that they forget to live the present, which is the only time that truly exists.
We all have equal time throughout the world. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one of us does with our time. We need to live each moment. As John Lennon said, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans”.
Congratulations for reading this till the end of this message.
There are many who will have stopped in the middle so as not to waste time in this “Globalized” world.
Shortchanged
October 4, 2010 at 10:25 pm (The bluez)
No matter how well i thought i was prepared for the disappointment, i was still disappointed. Objectively, everyone thinks that they have done their best and deserve rewards.
It was already difficult to cope with the disappointment but what made things worse was the gossip. People were snickering about the promotion list. Shall i be happy that they think that i was short changed? That they think that i deserved to be promoted?
It doesnt help, deep down, it hurt.
I wish i could throw a tantrum. But i got a few milestones to meet. “Let it lapse” they say. I know i was short changed. But i cannot bring myself to short change others.
Facebook politics
May 2, 2010 at 7:34 pm (People)
This is ridiculous.
Y was a university classmate. Added him as a friend along with a couple of other classmates. He had been somewhat a weirdo since Uni days and i never knew him well, just a hi and bye.
We did chat a little on FB initially, he always lamented that he has no girl friend etc etc and wanted me to recommend pretty girls. I somewhat got out of the situation “politely”.
Sometime last year, he drop me a mail wanting to know one of my friends listed on FB better. I politely decline as he was quite agressive and that fren is a mother of 2. Y went ahead to add that friend as a friend. He asked me for her number after unsuccesful attempts to get it from her. That friend dropped him from FB after a while.
A few days ago, Y dropped me a message again. He wanted to know if another friend of mine on FB was attached. I ignored him. Then came a second message “Can you help to link me with her?”
Ignore ignore.
Last night, i forgot to switch off FB chat and he popped up again.
Ignore ignore ignore.
Today, i decided to modify his profile so that he cannot view my friends. Well, i certainly do not want to compromise my female friends’ privacy. To my suprise, Y has already dropped me from his FB.
WTF!!!! Oh well, never mind. Good ridance!
White lie or the cold hard truth?
March 28, 2010 at 12:47 am (Uncategorized)
Sometimes there is a need for the cold hard truth to give a slap in the face before one can break out of the dream bubble
Example 1:
Went to view showflats last week and after sitting with the bankers, i realise there is no way i can afford a condo unit on my own. My dad commented that i would probably need to work way past age 67 to afford one. Ha! cold hard truth.
Example 2:
A fellow colleague just tendered resignation yesterday and i learnt that boss almost told him “good ridance” in the face. I feel quite sorry for this guy but i feel that he somewhat deserve it. He is just … erm … not there yet and for a guy in his 30s i thought it is so not acceptable. The technical and communication skills are not up to standards. There is also an obvious lack of sense of responsibility too. AWOLing when bosses travel for work, absent for an assessment which the company paid $1K for his training.
There is a dreamer streak in him and he always think he is meant for bigger things. Being the only one in the cohort who has yet to promote. It has become very a embarassing state. There were a few times that i sat down to talk to him but i never really raised what i feel about his “shortcomings” and how it is killing his career path. I merely pointed out some flaws in the promotion system.
Yes, the flaws in the promotion system is one of the reasons why he is not promoted. But the KEY factors are his competency and his attitude. Was i helping him by not telling him the truth or was i being cruel in not telling him the truth?
For me, I would rather be told of my flaws so that i can improve, rather than live in a lala land.
Smart vs street smart
February 9, 2010 at 11:02 pm (Uncategorized)
I really wonder why some people who were the cream of the crop during their academic years do not seem to be very smart at work.
L is the same age as me and was from a top boy’s school. He scored at least 30 over points more than me for PSLE also for Os, As etc.
But i seem to be picking up the mistakes and oversights that he kept making at work. Yes, given that it is an open fact that he has lost the passion for the job…but you wonder why he …
1) does not bother to turn up at work whenever boss makes overseas trips
2) does not bother to check his work properly
3) always take leave after he returns from work trips and
4) this one best. There was a presentation today and he used his laptop for the presentation. There was some time wasted to make the lappy talk to the projector, and the screen shown his desktop for about a minute or so. Long enough for all to read the random files on his cluttered desktop
- template for resignation
- how to bring up intelligent children
etc etc.
Faint!
